Site Updates Coming

A few changes to the site are coming. The biggest is a more predictable release of content. My goal is news feeds updated daily at 0800 Monday through Friday, with articles are bigger content Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Additionally I am working through my older content fixing the broken formatting introduced with the new theme, updating a few backend pieces, and adding additional language support. When making an account users are now able to select from many various languages that will translate at least the interface, and I am hoping to attempt some basic content translation as well. (Of course, that is hit and miss at best, so we will see!)

HAWX Pre-Order Plane Unlock Codes

H.A.W.X. LogoMany people are asking about the HAWX pre-order codes to unlock the three planes exclusive to different retailers. I got mine from GameStop today and was surprised it is not the traditional Xbox style unique key, but rather a plain old button combination. So, with that in mind, here are all three unlock codes for all three systems!

 

GameStop FB-22 Strike Raptor:

[UPDATED] 208-991-1196: Annoying Scammers at Their Worst

I got a phone call on my personal cell phone from that number (208-991-1196) yesterday and one on my work (VoIP) phone today. My personal number is unpublished and my work phone is only published to our customers and on our website (ok, so that one is generally available). Either way, they two are not linked, so I have never had a trouble with spam/telemarketing before now on my cell phone or my work phone really.

Outlook 2007 Woes: RSS Feeds1, Deleted IMAP Mail Still Showing, and Other Poor Design Choices

I am a nerd, and have generally become accustomed to the obscure practices unique to the IT field, such as clicking Start for the longest time in Windows to turn my computer off. It does not make sense when I first look at it, but it is the way it is, so I learn and live with it. However, after recently upgrading to Outlook 2007 and attempting to use it daily, I must say it is absurd how it handles some things. My first major hurdle was that I had a folder previously entitled RSS Feeds, so when I installed Outlook 2007 it made a default folder named RSS Feeds1. This was minor, but I was determined to fix it since it could not be that hard to fix...right? Sadly, you cannot simply rename default folders, so I spent some loving time with Google before finally discovering you can start Outlook with the /resetfoldernames flag after deleting the RSS Feeds folder I had created, causing the default folder will revert to its proper name and drop the extra 1. Why in the world does that have to be so difficult? Live and learn though; delete folders that may conflict with Outlook created folders prior to installing!

LinuxFest First Impressions

Well The Ohio LinuxFest was Saturday. I ended up going with four others, two of which (plus myself) went Friday night for the Fark party. The audience was huge but I won't guess at any numbers – I'm sure the LinuxFest guys will post some eventually. Despite apparently lower registration numbers I feel confident the actual number of visitors was greater than last year and the vendors had a fair variety to them. The talks themselves were the point I was a bit disappointed on. I'll have a full write-up later on tonight but despite some downsides I'm still glad I went.

Cuda Training

So I've been in Cali for training this past week. When I get home tomorrow morning I'll write some more as it's been very interesting. I got to spend a lot of time with Barracuda equipment and well, walked a lot. A lot. Anyways normal news should return tomorrow as well. I'm also going to speak with my instructor and see what if any documents I can publish. Unfortunately almost everything was marked confidential so I'm not sure how much I'll be able to - but suffice to say it's all some pretty cool stuff, and it utilizes open source heavily.

Ohio LinuxFest 2007!

Hey all, One of the nations largest annual free and open source expos (conveniently in our back yard), the Ohio LinuxFest, is coming up next month. It's still a little early to really get too excited, but I figured it's good to give at least a fair amount of warning for those who may have to request off work a month in advance and that sort of stuff. First off, the most important information of course: This years LinuxFest will be taking place in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday September 29th, 2007.

The Darkness Just Blew It

I've been playing The Darkness for the PS3. I was actually planning to review it as I got it off a trusted recommendation from a local GameStop employee and basically fell in love. I almost never finish games, but I was able to blow about 80-90% of the way through The Darkness in two sittings. And then I hit a bug that won't let me finish the game.

What's so important about that 128bit hex string? Well that just happens to be the processing key which unlocks all current high-definition movies, both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Hackers of the Doom9 forum [1] have been making plenty of news lately. Through the last few months they've made several breaks in the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) [10], the security mechanism aimed to keep high-definition movies locked up. Unfortunately for the movie industry it's proved only slightly more deterring than the Content Scramble System (CSS) used to encrypt original DVDs, which was broken by a lone teenager in his spare time to enable his movie watching under Linux [2].
