With Dragon Age under a month old, EA/BioWare has announced not one, but two more pieces of downloadable content (DLC) for the game. While one is just an item encouraging users to buy new and join the BioWare Social Network, the other is a full-fledged commercial add-on, making the total three so far.
Though details are scarce about the upcoming downloadable weapon (I cannot find anything except a copy of the newsletter itself and a few BioWare moderator forum posts detailing it as not being released until after 30 November), “The Edge,” subscribers to Dragon Age's newsletter recently got the following advance snippet:
“Those who purchase Dragon Age: Origins before November 30th will automatically receive the in-game item, ‘The Edge.’ The Edge is an extremely sharp blade that is the pinnacle of Ferelden crafting. It adds bonuses to damage, attack, and critical strike chance.”
This item is being released as a promotion to encourage new sales of the game as opposed to used, and to advocate gamers signing up for the new BioWare Social Network. This is done by granting the item as a free piece of DLC by registering your Dragon Age CD key in your BioWare Social Network account profile before 30 November. While this is relatively meager piece of DLC, it will no doubt be a good piece of equipment based off what has been released thus far, though we will not find out for sure until next week.
The second DLC recently announced is the third commercial add-on. Weighing in as the least expensive paid Dragon Age DLC yet, Return to Ostagar comes in at $5. This scenario revolves around returning to the game’s opening battlefield of Ostagar in the promise of finding a fellow survivor seeking the Grey Warden’s aid. Highlights include a new suit of armor lost with the king and a second chance to add Dog to your party if you failed to do so through the main game.
Overall, Return to Ostagar promises little compared to the previous commercial add-ons, which is likely why it comes in under their price points. However, until it is released it will not be known if it is worth $5 for what amounts to an unknown amount of gameplay and a suit of armor. As for when, BioWare has only said “this holiday season,” though hints on their Facebook and Twitter accounts have suggested an early to mid-December release.
